Located on the Costa Ártabra, Cariño emerges as a charming tourist destination that combines natural beauty, maritime tradition, and a delicious gastronomic offer. This coastal town has a long history as a fishing port because fishing has been a very important part of its economy and the life of its neighbors. The community has developed its self fishing techniques and knowledge of best practices and fishing seasons has been passed down from generation to generation. Over the years, fishing in Cariño has encompassed a wide variety of species, depending on sea conditions and seasons. This could include species such as cod, hake, sardines, octopus, barnacles, and other fish and shellfish that are abundant in the Atlantic waters. As in many coastal towns in Galicia, in Cariño the canning industry, so closely linked to fishing, has been another fundamental part of its economy. The canning factories were mainly dedicated to processing fresh fish and seafood for canning, which allowed the products to be kept fresh for long periods and facilitated their distribution to more distant markets. Similarly, due to its coastal location, Cariño's gastronomy is characterized by an abundance of products from the sea and the land.

That’s why some typical dishes and gastronomic products of the area are all fish and seafood, pork or veal steaks, pulpo a feira, zorza, caldo galego, empanadas (delicious pies of meat, cod, tuna, cockles, and scallops among others) and, to top it all off, the exquisite dish of fried cockles so characteristic of the region of Ortegal. A typical dessert in Cariño is "chaolas", a pastry made of flour and aniseed, fried, and sprinkled with sugar.

-Beaches: Cariño has several lovely beaches. Playa de Fornos or Playa de la Basteira would be the most popular choices, for their fine sands and calm waters. Here you can relax, take morning or afternoon strolls along the shore or enjoy sunbathing and swimming in the sea. Another lesser-known but more paradisiacal and romantic option would be to visit the cove of El Peiral. A place of crystal blue waters to dive into and also a place for reflection and meditation due to its magic and tranquillity as it is one of the Hidden Treasures of Ortegal.

-The port of Cariño: Explore the harbour, which is a lively place where you can see fishing boats and enjoy the maritime atmosphere. Also, if you like sport fishing, you can easily obtain a fishing licence for less than 5€ at the A BANCA offices and gamble the nights away with your fishing gear and seek your fortune by catching a succulent delicacy. Otherwise, you can simply stroll along the quays, chat with the fishermen and enjoy the sea views.

-Viewpoints: In addition to the Cabo Ortegal lighthouse, Cariño has other viewpoints. The Pósito viewpoint, near the church, offers good views, as does the Peiral do Campo viewpoint and the Basteira viewpoint. There are also viewpoints from higher places. We recommend the Mirador del Limo and the Mirador de La Miranda, which provide panoramic views, ideal for appreciating the natural beauty of the Ortegal coast.
