Cedeira is a beautiful municipality located in the west of the Ortegal region. The history of Cedeira is deeply linked to its coastal location and its maritime tradition. The historical background of Cedeira covers an extensive period, from ancient times to the present day. Its origins date back to the Bronze Age when the oldest archaeological remains have been dated.

Celtic communities inhabited Cedeira until the Roman occupation of the Iberian Peninsula. Archaeological remains have been found that suggest the presence of Roman villas and associated structures. Later, during the Middle Ages, Cedeira, like much of Galicia, was influenced by Germanic and Visigothic migrations and conquests. With the arrival of the Muslims to the peninsula, the region underwent changes and conflicts. The Reconquest, a period of recovery of territories by the Christians, also left its impact on the history of this municipality, which later became part of the former Kingdom of Galicia and later of the Kingdom of León. The influence of these kingdoms marked the political and social evolution of Cedeira.

In the 17th and 18th centuries, whaling was an important activity. Fishermen ventured out into the Atlantic in search of whales to exploit their resources. In the 19th century, Cedeira experienced significant economic growth as port infrastructures were improved and facilities were modernized to facilitate maritime trade. During the 20th century, it faced the economic and social changes characteristic of the time. Although fishing continued to be important, tourism began to play an important role due to the natural beauty of the area. The consolidation of the town as a tourist destination has continued to the present day.
